Operation Barkhane is an ongoing COUNTER-insurgenCY operation
In 2020, the Estonian Special Operations Unit started deployment in Mali in Task Force Takuba. ESTSOF, being the first to accept France’s offer to join Task Force Takuba, is a part of an expansion of the French-led counter-terrorist Operation Barkhane.
Special Operations Task Force Takuba was set up in the Barkhane counter-insurgency operation in Mali, a set of activities aimed at increasing the resilience of the local Mali army units through training, counseling, support and, where necessary, cooperation (TAAA – Train, Advise, Assist, Accompany).
The French counter-insurgency operation Barkhane aims to support the fight against Islamic extremists in five Sahel countries (Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad) and thus to contribute to the fight against illegal immigration and human trafficking towards Europe.
